Chapter 117
The Spearmaster and the Black Cat
Chapter 117
Chapter 117 – Item Box’ Progress
『Helme.』 (Shuuya)
Once I call, the small version of Helme appears in my field of vision.
『Yes. How may I be of assistance?』 (Helme)
『Helme, can you sense traps?』 (Shuuya)
『Sadly, that’s impossible. If you were to be asking in regards to heat or mana, then I can, but… even so, I think I can assist with the examination, if I leave your eye and check physically.』 (Helme)
『Oh, nevermind then.』 (Shuuya)
『Yes… I’m very sorry for my inability to help you in this regard, Your Excellency.』 (Helme)
『No, it’s alright. I’ll call you if there are too many monsters for Rollo and me to handle. I will rely on you at that time.』 (Shuuya)
『Yes!』 (Helme)
Even after my conversation with Helme, the spear traps continued on for a while, but once we went around the corner, they disappeared.
Instead, I detected some magic sources ahead of us.
The magic sources are larger than those we’ve encountered thus far.
I invoke <Hide>.
I don’t know whether Rollo possesses the <Hide> skill as well, but she sneaks next to me, while prowling as if on a hunt.
Walking ahead of her, I carefully approach the magic sources’ location.
The sources appear to belong to a group of three medium-sized goblins.
They possess their race’s typical green skin, along with thick bodies, short olive brown hair, and bushy eyebrows. They are very Daigoro-like, chinless Gen-san like goblins. 1
“Rollo, this time you remain on standby in the rear. I have some more spells I need to test.” (Shuuya)
“N, nya.”
Rollo did as told, taking some distance behind me.
The medium-sized goblins wear sturdy-looking leather armor, wielding clubs and barbarian swords with their thick arms.
The passage is rather bright, so I’m unsure whether <Hide> is effective…
Well, it seems they’re still unaware of our presence, even after entering within their field of vision.
Oh, well that is certainly very convenient.
Since they’ve kindly given me this opportunity, I’ll now begin testing my magic on them.
I cast the Advanced class: Water attribute spell, 《Frozen Snake Arrow》, in my mind.
At that moment, countless human arm sized ice arrows manifest in mid-air, momentarially hurdling forward.
As if they were homing missiles, the mass of ice arrows, leaving frosty white light trails in their wake, pierces the heads, smashes the stomachs, and stabs into the feet of the goblins.
The ice arrows easily penetrated the sturdy leather armor and protectors of the goblins.
I suppose the goblins can be considered thoroughly dead by now, right?
I unceremoniously undo <Hide>.
There’s no particular need to stay hidden anymore, after all.
Thinking it over, the spell may not quite match up with the Extreme class, 《Frozen Dragoness》, but it’s not any weaker than what you’d expect from Advanced class magic.
The arrows’ high quantity and quality are unbelievable.
Although they used up quite a bit of mana, my natural recovery is already very incredible anyway.
That means I should be able to use this spell successively.
Perhaps if I stay on this path, I will completely turn into a full fledged wizard!
Wouldn’t it be a good idea to add it to my guild card’s occupational category in advance?
Wizard… well, excusing the silly jokes, I’ll make sure to keep it in moderation.
My main job is that of a Magic Halberd-wielding vanguard, after all.
“Nyaon, nya!”
Rollo-san delivers a fierce cat jab against the large face of a dead goblin.
“Rollo, you’re pretty cautious, aren’t you? That makes sense, since I can’t collect the magic stones until it’s safe.” (Shuuya)
“Nn, nyaon.”
I take out an Ancient Dragon Dagger from my chest belt and chop up all three of the goblins’ corpses.
The goblins also possess some weaponry and armors, but I decide against collecting those items.
They might sell for a bit, but seeing as I can’t sense any mana emanating from them, there’s not really much worth in them.
Ugh… As their body structures are similar to that of a human’s, I feel rather uncomfortable prying them open.
All three goblins had green magic stones within their chests, close to their hearts.
After taking out the magic stones, I proceed to clean them, as well as my hands, with water using life magic.
Nice, squeaky clean.
Okay, now that I have the magic stones, let’s begin.
Commanding “Open!”, I activate the item box.
I press the diamond-shaped ◆ mark in the menu.
The submenu listed the ◆ mark on the left and the amount of magic stones required on the right.

―――――――――――――――――――――――――――
Lucky!
This clears everything up.
The magic stone has been properly recognized as one Elenium stone.
I just need 49 more now, huh?
I guess it’s time to get all of the medium magic stones required for the item box upgrade.
It didn’t take long to acquire the 30 small stones, so 30 medium ones should be just as quick.
Nonetheless, I just can’t consider it a coincidence that the magic stones were recognized.
Kuna said that this item box was originally found within a labyrinth, after all.
I’m sure that the person, who used it before, was in this labyrinth in the past.
Though they might have been one of the aliens shown by the item box from before…
Or maybe a different adventurer obtained it as a labyrinth drop item because that alien died, or something of the sort?
Of course, it might have just been a coincidental exhibition in the Underground Auction.
“Nyao.”
Mmh, while pondering about the mysterious item box, Rollo calls out to me.
In an instant, I activate <Grasping Perception>.
— I see.
Several magic sources, more than what I encountered last time.
A band of medium-sized goblins?
“Rollo, your flame breath is off-limits, but anything besides that is alright.” (Shuuya)
Rollo dashes ahead, as if saying “That’s what I was waiting for.”
I’m hesitant about any fire magic use right now, because Rebecca said “This is the first floor. That’s why it’s fine even if you use fire magic”, back when she was using her magic.
Although she might have just said so by chance, as we’re on the second floor now, I can’t think of any good reason to risk it.
I’d like to avoid any possible secondary issues such as oxygen deprivation, gas, and dust.
Then again, I might just be overthinking too much.
Bracing myself, I summon the Magic Halberd into my right hand.
While looking at the back of panther form Rollo, I run towards the magic sources.
They do indeed belong to several medium-sized goblins, it seems.
There are four goblin shield bearers forming a wall in the front, while along the rear, there are four goblin archers.
Rollo extends her tentacle bone swords with a buzzing sound, stabbing into the feet of the shield bearers in front.
As usual, I start by eliminating the ranged enemies first.
While running, I repeatedly fire <Chain Spear of the Ray SystemShining Chain Lance>.
I shoot as many of them in succession as I can, amounting to five in total.
The five light spears pass over the vanguard goblins while drawing a curve, almost skimming the ceiling, and accurately pierce the bodies of the goblin archers in the rear.
The fifth light spear deviated from its course, but it doesn’t change the fact that the archer gobs were skewered.
Maintaining my focus, I hunch my back forwards, gripping my Halberd close to my body, and charge onwards.
I’ve decided on the first shield-bearing bastard to slay.
Kicking the ground with one leg, I jump slightly, while bringing down my Magic Halberd onto the goblin’s head.
The goblin tried to defend itself, holding its shield overhead.
But— Divine Punishment! With that kind of feeling, the red axe blade at the front part of the swung Magic Halberd, smashes down towards the goblin’s head, destroying it alongside the shield, continuing down, until losing all momentum halfway through the goblin’s chest.
Blood furiously pours out of the destroyed upper body.
I yank my halberd out, simultaneously changing my grip, and quickly start to pick the next target.
With perfect timing, the shield-bearing goblin next to me, having lost its balance due to one of Rollo’s tentacle bone sword attacks, falls over.
I get a clear view of it kissing the ground.
Swiveling the Halberd around, I easily smash the awkward goblin’s head to bits with the magic dragon crystal at the butt end of the Halberd.
There are only two goblins remaining now.
The goblins, cautious after experiencing our joint attacks, slowly approach while guarding themselves with their kite shields.
These last two goblins are wielding the shields in their left hand, and short hatchets in their right.
They attempt an attack on mine and Rollo’s weapons, but with the way they’re handling those weapons, the short hatchets lose any meaning.
The Magic Halberd is an Axe Spear – Halberd. (T/N: OMG, finally, after 117 chapters, he defines the stupid thing)
Since Rollo has six tentacle bone swords reaching far and wide, the goblins couldn’t get close to us without entering our attack range.
Once the Magic Halberd and the tentacle bone swords have the goblins’ full attention, I quickly raise my left hand and shoot <Chain>.
The chain stabs both of their knees so fast that it was practically imperceivable.
“”Gyaaaaaaa!””
Having their knees suddenly pierced, the goblins scream in pain.
Having lost the ability to remain standing, they collapse to the ground hugging their legs, and begin to thrash about, splattering blood everywhere.
Rollo’s tentacles speed toward the goblins’ necks, proceeding to penetrate through their throats and shred them to pieces, making them finally shut their gobs.
With this, all the goblins found in this passage have been annihilated.
“Rollo, I leave standing guard to you once again.” (Shuuya)
“Nn, nya.”
Rollo replies with a quiet, throaty purr.
Apparently having acknowledged my request, she proceeds to scan both sides of the passage with her red eyes while stepping to the side, after having loosely bent her limbs.
She’s a very intelligent child.
Well then, I suppose it’s time to begin collecting.
I pry the magic stones out of the recently-turned-dead corpses with a “Yay, more goodies~” kind of feeling.
After collecting every magic stone, I use my dagger to begin dismantling.
… Thinking it over now, the degree of difficulty has experienced a sharp increase on the second floor, hasn’t it?
Such a high number and quality of monsters, and they weren’t even in a room.
That’s the reason why the receptionist tried to stop me.
I suppose having party members is usually considered a necessity for most adventurers.
While pondering about that, I finished the dismantling, so I quickly clean both of my hands, as well as the magic stones, with the life magic’s water.
All of the collected medium magic stones amount to seven, adding up to a total of ten, when including the three I collected previously.
I will put all of these magic stones into the diamond-shaped mark of the item box.
I wonder how it turned out? Thinking of such a thing, I check once more.

―――――――――――――――――――――――――――
The medium magic stones were accepted.
It looks like they aren’t classified as unknown stones anymore.
Only 40 more left to go now.
If I consider the number of stones necessary for the guild’s request, I’ll have to obtain fifty more.
I decide to continue heading deeper into the labyrinth.
We encounter a constant series of split, Y-shaped passages that continue on for a while.
Each time we reach a new one, we are roughly greeted by medium-sized goblins that had settled down at the aforementioned divergences.
We advance forward while continuously defeating those goblins.
The total number of defeated goblins ended up amounting to 25.
I emptied all of the magic stones we obtained into the item box.
15 more, and if I were to include the guild’s share as well, 25.
I continue advancing through the passage for a while longer, but no more monsters appear…
Thereupon, an arched gate, that seems to be the entrance to a room, came into sight ahead of us.
I can sense multiple magic sources inside.
A monster room at last, huh?
Just like in an RPG, the quantity and quality of monsters is higher in a room rather than in the passages.
“Rollo, let’s go.”
“Nya.”
We intrude without activating <Hide>.
The size of the room hasn’t really changed in particular, when compared to the rooms found on the first floor.
There are two other arched entrances that appear to lead into two different passages, on the left side and straight ahead.
There are three shield-bearing medium-sized goblins standing near the side of the room closest to me.
In the central back… I’m able to see an unknown goblin.
Is that the hobgoblin mentioned in the request?
It has ashy green long hair.
Though it has a hunchback, it’s a slim goblin.
Holding a curved longsword, it has a swordsman-like appearance that would have befit a human warrior.
It’s wearing tawny, light leather armor that’s protecting the area around its abdomen, as well as a pair of sandals.
For a goblin to have gladiator sandals, huh?
That actually looks kind of stylish.
The moment we enter the room, the unknown goblin glances our way.
As expected, it easily noticed our intrusion, hasn’t it?
The monster, that might be considered to be a hobgoblin, slowly moves its hunchback and glares at us with its green eyes that have red circles around them.
Preparing its longsword, it opened its mouth wide— and roared.
“Gyaaoooo.”
“”Gyagyagyagya.””
“Gogyagya!”
The hobgoblin and the medium-sized goblins in front shouted at each other, as if they were receiving instructions from the hobgoblin. A goblin wielding a round shield and two others wielding kite shields charge at us, while bracing their shields in front of them.
The hobgoblin seems to observe the situation from behind and waits.
Before I do anything, RolloBlack Panther makes her move against the charging goblins.
After seizing the feet of the goblin using the round shield with her tentacle bone swords, making it tumble, she immediately drags its legs to the right side and moves.
I hold the Magic Halberd in such a way that it’s aimed at the eyes of the charging goblin.
I meet the medium-sized goblins with a full frontal assault.
I casually stab the first kite shield-wielding goblin that readily entered my attack range with the spear point of the Magic Halberd.
The first attack was easily prevented by the kite shield.
However, I unleash a barrage of thrusts. — I thrust and thrust— and thrust.
The goblin defends against the spear with its shield, but the Halberd is made out of materials from the Evil Dragon King Baldok.
There’s absolutely no way for it to be able to defend time and time again against my continuous barrage of thrusts. The kite shield quickly becomes full of holes due to my overwhelming assault.
In the end, the kite shield was magnificently crushed and destroyed.
At the same time, the spear point penetrates the arm that held the shield.
Having it’s arm injured, the goblin raised a shrill scream and tried to flee the battle through the rear.
At that moment, the other medium-sized goblin raised its barbarian sword overhead and launched a diagonal slash, supposedly aiming for my collar.
— In a hurry, I swiftly pull back the Magic Halberd.
As I stopped the advancing barbarian sword with the axe end of the halberd, violet sparks scattered.
Utilizing the recoil of the blow, I twirl the Magic Halberd in a circle.
As if to say “What goes around, comes around!”, I swung the butt end of the magic dragon gem in an arc, slamming it into the nether region of the goblin.
— With a dull sound, the smelly-looking balls of the goblin are pulverized.
The magic dragon gem dug into the body of the medium-sized goblin, crushing it’s bones and flesh all the way up until finally stopping at its waist.
You might say that its genitals have completely caved-in.
“Ugyo? Oooooh—”
Goblin-san falls to the ground while raising a strange, agony-filled death cry… Amen.
With this, it looks like the blue crystal has become nauseating, doesn’t it?
For caution’s sake, I make the hidden bladeIce Claw grow out of the magic dragon gem.
Like that, I advance while using <Magic Steps>.
The medium-sized goblin that fled in panic after being injured, comes into view.
I swiftly rotate my body to the front so I’m facing that guy’s head.
— I unleash a ferocious axe kick down on its head, heel first. (ED: This is an Axe Kick:http://taekwondo.wikia.com/wiki/Axe_Kick)
The tough Evil Dragon King Baldok’s greaves cover the heels as well.
The violet heel collides with the goblin’s skull, smashing it like a watermelon.
As I land, I slam my foot down on the goblin’s head, completely pulverizing it to bits.
As if aiming for the exact moment I hit the ground, the hobgoblin launches a nimble slash in my direction.
It mows down towards me with its curved longsword— the motion is quick.
In a hurry, I diagonally stab the Halberd into the ground in order to block the side sweep unleashed by the hobgoblin.
His curved longsword and my Magic Halberd clash.
A hard metallic clank, that makes one’s ears bleed, reverberates.
The ice blade, that grew out of the Halberds magic dragon gem, vibrated.
Right after unleashing a single flash, the hobgoblin apparently intended to start another attack without any breaks, but seeing my reaction with the Magic Halberd, it stops its movements in the middle of its assault, retreating with a back step.
Both its discernment and footwork are surprisingly good.
It resembles the movement of a normal human swordsman.
RolloBlack Panther advances towards the receded hobgoblin.
She extends her six tentacle bone swords, that grew out of the area around her neck, towards the hobgoblin.
Seems like RolloBlack Panther has already killed the round shield-holding goblin.
There’s the figure of a decapitated goblin on the right side of the floor.
RolloBlack Panther bent the six tentacles, handling them like whips.
She unleashes a relentless bombardment of strikes and stabs with the bone swords.
It’s a terrifyingly powerful barrage.
The hobgoblin skillfully uses its curved longsword, barely defending against the continuous attacks, while retreating.
Hee, it’s properly defending.
Even though it’s a monster, it’s quite skilled.
It seems to be worthy of being a subjugation target that rewards one with 15 gold coins, after all.
In order to not hinder Rollo’s attacks, I move to the hobgoblin’s flank with <Magic Steps>.
I precisely jab the red spear point towards the legs of the hobgoblin, while simultaneously constraining its flank.
Unable to successfully cope with the sudden attacks from its flank, it quickly suffered the thrust of the red spear.
The hobgoblin’s movements become dull abruptly, as it whimpers in anguish.
— A chance. I hurl a <Darkness Drill> at it.
The instant the spear point, turning into one straight red-violet and black wind spiral, collides with the hobgoblin’s flank, its skinny torso twists grotesquely, tearing apart its upper and lower body into two halves.
The hobgoblin’s hunchback-like upper body dances in midair.
The entrails, that didn’t get burnt, scatter around from the lower body half, which also exposed a part of its spinal cord.
Gushing out vigorously, a torrent of blood splashes onto my face.
Perfect timing.
All this exercise was making me rather thirsty.
I drink it while making repetitive gulping sounds.
“Nyao.”
As I’m drinking the blood, Rollo purred lightly as if to tell me “Good work”, and started to lick the blood flowing on the ground.
“Rollo, don’t be careless. Stay on guard, since there are two more entrances, of which we know not where they lead, to the left and in front of us, okay?” (Shuuya)
“Nnn, nya~o, nya.”
Since her reply is mixed with a throaty voice, it feels as if she’s saying 『Can’t be helped nya』, doesn’t it?
Though it might be something else, as it’s just a feeling.
I collect all of the magic stones.
A medium magic stone was recovered from the hobgoblin’s corpse.
The corpse has been severed into two pieces, but since it will serve as proof of subjugation, let’s put both halves into the item box.
Though the price will likely be lowered due to the wounds, it can’t be helped.
I wash the four recently obtained magic stones, as well as my face while I’m at it.
I offered the clean magic stones to the diamond-shaped mark.
Once I give the remaining eleven magic stones to the item box, I’ll be rewarded with a capacity upgrade.
Well then, the passages still continue.
I close the window of the item box, and glance towards the passages ahead.
Let’s head out? Thinking of advancing just like that, I examine the passages in front and to the left.
I choose the passage in front.
The cream-colored passage continues for a while.
Medium-sized goblins continue to appear in the passages, while hobgoblins appear in the monster rooms.
While Rollo and I smoothly defeat the monsters who appear in our way, we suitably proceed through various splits in the passages, making our way through the labyrinth.
◇◇◇◇
We defeated a medium-sized goblin that appeared in the passage just now, and I’m currently dismantling it.
… It took some time, but I was able to gather the 50 medium magic stones I needed.
Time to drop the final magic stone into the diamond-shaped mark.
Promptly, I chant 「Open」 and the item box boots up.
I press the diamond-shaped mark in anticipation.

The characters of monsters were displayed.
Are these the names of the monsters I defeated inside the labyrinth until now?
Or is it displaying information recorded from the monsters’ stored magic stones, in some sort of way?
Well, umm, I guess it’s either of those?
I touch the Zanbiss shown in the window.
Apart from the floor they’re found in, the following is displayed:
※Zanbiss※
Monster: Big Rat
Weak Point: Head
A monster graphic was displayed in a small window.
Once I touch the 3-D image, it zooms in. I can also zoom out.
But, although one might call it a graphic, it’s not in 4K or Full HD, but is instead a Braun tube framed image, making it give off a somewhat cheap impression. (ED: A bit confusing. Imagine something like this:https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monochrome_monitor)
※Goblin Soldier※
Monster: Goblin Type
Weak Point: Head, Heart, Nether Region
Although it calls it a weak point, the head and the heart being weak points can only be regarded as natural.
※Goblin Brandel※
Monster: Goblin Type
Weak Point: Head, Heart
At that point, I closed the item box window.
Now then, it’s important to enhance this item box, but I also have to complete the adventurer’s guild’s requests.
I resume the labyrinth exploration.
I chose the front passage of the current monster room, and began walking ahead.
There are no traps, but I immediately sense several magic sources.
Probably medium-sized goblins again.
Their actual name seems to be Goblin Soldier, according to the information.
Just as I thought, goblin soldiers appear walking from inside the passage.
While defeating those goblin soldiers, I continued through several branching paths.
Consistently killing goblins, I managed to gather 12 medium magic stones.
I won’t offer most of these magic stones to the diamond-shaped mark in the item box yet.
They’re the share for the magic stone collection request.
Having already collected ten stones, I guess I will aim for the additional reward.
I advance, continuing to slay the goblins that appear in the passages at a steady pace.
It’s great that the magic stone collection is going smoothly, but where are the Bat Ants necessary for the subjugation requests?
I still haven’t encountered any…
Is the place to which I warped to a den of goblins, by chance?
That seems to be the only possibility.
After all, I only ran into large amounts of goblins.
Right as I decided I was sick of seeing just goblins…
Huh? White feces?
White, excrement-like material has been discharged alongside the wall.
There wasn’t such poop-like stuff until now…
I advance, while examining the labyrinth’s passage in search of a cause for any change.
For some reason, goblins have suddenly stopped appearing.
Oh? It’s a corpse.
In front me, a goblin corpse can be seen lying on the ground.
Checking the corpse, I notice that the head has been seemingly bitten off, with half of it’s skull missing.
Did a goblin and another monster have a fight?
