Chapter 396 – Me and My Zombie Family (2)
The attack of the unknown virus instantly shattered humanity’s entire social system.
From cities to villages, to factories, to military camps, to research institutes…
So long as it was a place where humans and animals lived together, the spread of the unknown virus could not be stopped. Pets, mice, birds, and even small insects were carriers of the mutated virus!
Yet, amidst this dangerous situation, hundreds of millions of people were hiding in their rooms and laughing maniacally while looking at their phones and computers.
“Brother at the front, I beg of you, can you please stop looking at those infected?” Chen Yu pleaded while walking through the corridor leading to the medical department. “There are more than 20 zombies in the line already.”
“This isn’t my fault, Headmaster. I didn’t want to look at them, either,” the lanky boy at the front of the line said at the brink of tears. “Why don’t you just have Department Head Hermione kill them?”
“They mustn’t be killed,” Hermione said calmly. “When those infected dies, the blood around their wounds will swell and overflow, covering the surrounding area. The virus’s virality will also greatly increase. So, if I kill even one infected, everyone here will be instantly infected.”
“I think we are already infected at this point,” a male professor walking at the right side of the line said. He then pulled up his sleeve and showed the black veins covering his arm. “Many of the bubbles they spit out will burst in the air. If you breathe in the resulting vapor, there’s no avoiding getting infected. The dosage might be lower, but I think it won’t take more than two hours for the infection to spread throughout the body completely.”
“Headmaster, they’re spitting bubbles on my back,” the female professor standing at the back of the line said in disgust. “It’s disgusting.”
Turning around, Chen Yu sent a glance at the female professor, “You’re definitely infected. Even your face has turned black.”
“How about giving me a stab before I turn? I don’t want to play anymore.”
“Be serious! We’re facing a biological crisis right now. You need to play the part.”
“I don’t want to play anymore,” the female professor said tearfully. “They’ve spat all over me. It feels sticky and slippery.”
Roar!
At this time, a beastly roar suddenly came from in front of the line, interrupting everyone’s conversation.
Everyone hurriedly looked toward the source of the roar, only to find a giant creature running towards them!
There was even a dark brown intestine hanging off of the fangs of this black and white creature…
“It’s one of the pandas I’m raising!” Narrowing his eyes, Chen Yu said, “Hermione, figure out a way to lock it inside a room. If that huge thing dies, the bubbles it produces will cover half the corridor.”
“Understood.” Hermione nodded and stepped forward without hesitation. After attracting the infected panda’s attention, she promptly moved into an empty room nearby.
Roar!
The panda spat out a mouthful of bubbles and chased after Hermione. However, it accidentally exchanged a glance with the lanky student at the front in the next moment.
Whoosh!
The next moment, the panda stood upright and, under everyone’s stunned gazes, wobbled past the long line and stuck itself to the back of the line.
[Lololol.]
[The protagonist of this disaster is actually the Rhythm Virus, right?]
[I can already imagine a line of zombies measuring up to several kilometers in length…]
My house is no longer receiving electricity. The signal towers have also stopped working. So, why can I still watch the UP’s livestream?]
[Didn’t we mention it before? Transdimensional Review’s livestream isn’t restricted by modern networks.]
“…”
Chen Yu: “The R-Rhythm Virus’s effects aren’t limited to just humans?”
“It is common knowledge that pandas might be human beings in disguise,” a female student said.
“To hell with your disguise! This is clearly a bug, right? Why would a panda be affected as well?!”
“Headmaster, it might be due to the BDNF gene sequence,” one of the professors standing beside the line said. “In February 2018, Professor Lin Feng and his colleagues once published an article titled Molecular Cloning and Heterologous Expression of the Brain Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) Gene from Giant Panda. They designed a pair of primers based on the human BDNF gene sequence. They then conducted the polymerase chain reaction using these primers and successfully cloned the BDNF gene from the panda’s DNA. Subsequent analysis showed that the coding region of the BDNF gene from giant pandas was highly homologous with that of human counterpart genes.”
“What does that mean?”
“It’s simple. The paper proves that humans and pandas have the same BDNF gene sequence. Seeing as the panda is affected by the Rhythm Virus, it is safe to assume that the Rhythm Virus might be targeting the BDNF gene.”
“Your major is…”
“Biomedical basic research. I specialize in genetics.”
“Oh! What a coincidence! Can you give us a detailed explanation of this mutated virus, then?” Chen Yu asked as he looked at the many infected behind him.
“I don’t know much about viruses. I don’t have the right equipment to collect samples, either. Professor Sun is the best in this field. We were chatting via WeChat just now, and he says he is currently hiding and doing work in the laboratory.”
“Is Professor Sun in the medical department?”
“Yes.”
“OK. Let’s speed up and head to the medical department. Once we figure out the virus’s details, we’ll proceed with the next disaster. There are still seven more waiting for us…”
…
Everyone began marching forward once more, passing through the corridor, crossing the Stone Bridge, climbing the Dark Tower, and entering the Clock Tower. After overcoming the numerous obstacles along the way, the group finally arrived at the Transdimensional Academy’s medical department.
By the time Chen Yu arrived in front of the medical department’s laboratory, the number of zombies behind him already numbered 44, including the panda.
From an outsider’s perspective, this procession looked bizarre no matter how one looked at it.
“Professor Sun, are you in? Respond if you are,” the lanky boy at the front shouted as he looked through the laboratory’s glass wall.
“…” The laboratory remained silent.
“Hey! We’re here to deliver warmth!”
“…” There was still no response from inside the laboratory.
“The glass is soundproof. He might not have heard you,” Chen Yu said. “You need to tap on the glass.”
“Okay.” Nodding, the lanky boy raised his right hand and tapped on the glass.
Bang, bang, bang.
Immediately afterward, 26 humans, 43 zombies, and 1 panda raised their right hands (or paw) and knocked on the glass wall as well.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Boom! Boom! Boom!
Clang, clang, clang…
The glass shattered instantly.
Chen Yu: “…”
Everyone: “…”
“What the heck are you doing?!”
“D-Didn’t you tell me to knock, Headmaster?” the lanky boy said aggrievedly.
“I didn’t tell you to do it with so much force!”
“With so many people knocking on the glass, it’ll shatter even if I do it gently.”
“It seems you’re pretty stubborn, huh?!”
“I…”
“You people…” At this time, Professor Sun, who had been hiding behind a centrifuge in a full-body protective suit, walked out from his hiding spot and asked, “What are you doing?”
“We were afraid that you couldn’t hear us, so we knocked on the window,” Chen Yu explained.
Hearing this, Professor Sun lowered his head and looked at the shattered glass. “Did you knock it with an excavator?”
“Cough. Don’t mind the details. I have something to ask you. How much do you understand about this virus? Do you know how it is transmitted? How infectious and lethal is it?”
“…Let’s talk about the virus in a moment.” Rubbing his protective goggles, Professor Sun swept his gaze across the entire line of humans and zombies. Frowning, he asked, “Are you guys…having a date with the zombies?”
